5 Languages of LOVE

The first time I (Janel) heard the phrase "five love languages", I thought it was interesting. Is there really a specific way to let someone know they are loved? Does each person really convey love in his or her own unique way? Is it possible that someone may be loved, but not feel love by another?

The love language concept can be described in this way… Each person expresses love in their own unique way. These expressions can be organized into five categories. The way in which a person shows love to someone, is likely, how he or she would like to be shown that they are loved. This is called their "love language". If the person that you love does not speak the same language as you, then there could be the possibility that one of you isn’t feeling loved.

What we hope to convey is a brief summary of the information found in Dr. Gary Chapman’s books The Five Love Languages and The Five Love Languages of Children. The objective is that you will have a general understanding of these five love languages. What language do you speak? What happens when we don’t speak the same language as another? What happens when we know and speak our loved one's language?

Trio fellows..and Mika

Today I went to the pet shop together with my sis. We saw cute little rabbits jumping around. It brought sweet memories of the trio fellows in my family. We had them since December 2001. They are called Phoebe, Lewis and Ellwe. They were so small and active when they were young. Ellwe died last year when I was in Rome.

Phoebe and Lewis are great buddies. It is sweet to see Phoebe and Lewis together most of the time. They will take care of each other. When I disturb Lewis, Phoebe will come to Lewis' defence.

Mika, a new addition to the family is also the youngest among them. She is a bit tempermental but loves to be doted.

IT Security..disposal of hard-disk..

Ready to recycle that Old PC? Read this first.

Throwing out an old computer is complicated. First, there are heavy metals used in most PCs, and you don't want that ending up in the local landfill. Second, there's the data on the hard drive. If you're not careful, it could end up in the hands of data thieves. Whether you're donating that used PC to a local school or selling it on an online auction site, you'll want to remove your personal files first. Here's a quick lesson in how data is stored and what you can do to keep others from reading your e-mail and seeing your financial data from five years ago.

Free Ben & Jerry Ice-cream...burden

Yeah!! Today I have free Ben & Jerry Strawberry cheesecake ice-cream at Suntec City. After I queued and collected the ice-cream, I wanted to go to Carrafour to have a walk. As I walked into Carrafour, a man stopped me and said, "Excuse me, you are not allowed to eat in the toilet." I burst out laughing. The man corrected himself, "Sorry, in the store." We just laughed.

Lately, these are few things in life that are causing me 'headache'. Yesterday morning, I could not really focus on my work but I thanked God for my colleagues...The jokes that they told during lunch made that day lighter and more bearable ;-) It is true that laughter is a good medicine but the doctor is still my precious Lord Jesus. Many things are beyond me. I need to take things in its stride and commit all to God.

I did a word search, "burden" at Gospelcom.net and it listed many verses...

Matthew 11:30 - Jesus said," For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Galatians 5:1 - It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Galatians 6:2 - Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Looking forward to the long weekend. Going for a short trip near Kota Tinggi to explore the nature with a group of friends. When I am out of Singapore, it is like all burdens are left behind ;p

A tour to the Holy Land

I received my regular mail from The Bible Society of Singapore. I saw this leaflet about a trip to Israel, a tour to the Holy Land. How is it like to step on this land where Jesus was 2000 years ago? The thought of it thrills me. Hope to make this trip one of these days.

When is Easter?

Christmas is December 25; Valentine's Day is February 14; Halloween is October 31 -- but when is Easter? Each year we have to look at a calendar to find out when Easter is, for this moveable feast can occur any time from March 22 to April 25. Why is this so?

Ravi Zacharias - His early days

The first chapter of Ravi Zacharias’ memoirs is online at the Ravi Zacharias International Ministries website. It’s an excellent read and an interesting look at the childhood experiences that shaped his faith and theology. Among the experiences he relates are a harrowing family crisis as his younger brother neared death, Ravi’s initial rejection of Christianity after an encounter with a pair of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and other events from his youth in India that he now looks back at through the window of faith.

Life lessons

I am the priviledged few to have a preview of a book a friend of mine is writing. I read the first chapter and he chronicled how he came to know God when he was 18. Writing reveals a person's inner thought life. He is now more than 50 years old. Like what he said we may look matured and different on the outside as compared to our younger days, but inside us we are pretty much the same. After reading this chapter, I prayed that God will help me to be more sensitive to others and to see things beyond the surface. No matter how tough a person may look on the outside, there are still struggles and cries in our hearts that are concealed from others.

I have been shopping lately to replenish my wardrobe. I went to a boutique and wanted to buy 2 tops but it did not have the right size for me. The sales assistant helped me to check with other branches and there were available stocks. I could only collect them 2 days later. Before I made the payment, I was told that if I had a particular card, I would enjoy 10%. I told her I did not have the card with me. I told her I would buy these items next time so that I could enjoy the discount. Seeing this, she was willing to give me the benefits of the doubt and I got to enjoy the 10%the discount. I promised her that I would bring the card as proof when I collect my tops. I paid and left. I collected the tops today and showed her the card as proof that I was entitled to the 10% discount.

She said, "I'm so glad that you show me your card. I was disappointed by the few customers who said they had the cards but did not come back as promised."

It may be an insignificant gesture and remark to many but it reminded me the importance of honouring our words.

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. - 1 Cor. 2:14

About Greece

Yesterday, I went to Omnimax Theatre to watch "Greece - Secrets of the Past" with 3 friends. I have not been there for more than a decade since my secondary school days. I went with an expectation that I would learn more about the history of Greece within the short 40 minutes. I was quite disappointed because the content was not substantial enough and it focused quite a fair bit on the vulcanic and archaelogical parts. I was trying to keep myself awake during the show. That was how bad it was.

Neverthless, I thought this information below which I captured on Ominmax exhibit boards was interesting.

SCIENTIFC LEGACY

Ancient Greece made many impressive contributions to science and technology.

Astronomy
Thales of Miletus, an early Greek astronomer gave us the measurement of the apparent diameter of the sun. He explained solar eclipses. He also defined the constellation Ursa Minor and wrote on astronomy's use in navigation. Pythagoras stated that Earth is sphere and ships over horizon, positions of starts and poles change in relation to Earth if move N or S. Heracleides of Pontus stated that Earth rotates.

Mathematics
Pythagoras, a Greek mathematician gave us the Pythagoras theorem in geometry. The theorem states that the square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

Medicine
Hippocrates was regarded as the father of medicine. One of his most important contributions was to set standards (the Hippocratic Oath) for medical practioners. In taking the Oath, a physician promised to be honest with patients, to protect and preserve life, and to keep information about patients private.

Science and Technology
Science in Ancient Greece was based on logical thinking, mathematics, technology and everyday life. A brilliant Greek scientist, Archimedes invented the Archimedes' screw, a machine for raising water. He also accurately estimted the value of pi and explained the law of the lever. Another invention of his was the pulley to life heavy objects.

Engineering
Hero, the first hydraulic engineer lived after 150 BC. He modernized the obtaining of water through a method known as the siphon principle. The siphon principle allows pipes that carry water to follow the terrain of the land.

MYTHS VS MEANINGS

One of the most enduring legacies of Ancient Greece is the collection of stories that tell the tales of gods and heroes. Collectively, these stories are known as myths.

"Myths" or the Ancient Greek word "Mythos" came from Homer. It meant story without the connotation of any falsehood. Over time, as these "mythos" became "harder-to-believe stories", they came to have the connotation of modern day "myth" - something that is false.

You'll be surprised these words and expression in modern day English was influenced by Greel mythology.

Achilles' Heel
Meaning: A person's weak spot
Greek Myth: A hero of the Trojan War, Achilles was a Greek hero whose mother, Thetis, was a sea goddess. Achilles was destined to die young, so his mother dipped him in to the river Styx, which would make him invincible. However, she held him by the heel, thus, leaving a vulnerable srea. He would later die, as prophesized by an arrow to his heel.

Herculean Effort
Meaning: A mighty try
Greek Myth: Heracles ("Hercules" in Roman/Latin) was the son of Zeus and a mortal woman. He was obligated to fulfill twelve tasks, called the Labours of Heracles. Hence, any effort we nowadays deem as tremendous can be attributed as "Herculean" or great and is associated with the Labours.

Midas Touch
Meaning: A person who is always lucky is said to have the Midas touch
Greek Myth: One of mythology's most famous tales is that of King Midas. He was granted the wish that everything he touched would turn to gold. However, he soon realized he could not eat, drink or even hug his daughter. Therefore, he rescinded his wish and immersed himself in the river Pactolus, and lost his "golden touch".

Phobia
Meaning: Fear
Greek Myth: Phobos is the Greek word for fear. However, myth has it that Phobos, was a son of Ares - who was the personification of fear, essentially in battles.

Hanoi...

Jay went to Hanoi, Vietnam for holiday in March. He wrote his personal account there and took a lot of beautiful pictures too.

I would like to travel to places in Asia like Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Cambodia..etc ;-)

People who write well, think well

I will let you have a glimpse into my working life. My job requires me to liaise with MNCs frequently and also requires good business writing skills. In course of this, I bought "We, Me, Them & It" by John Simmons from MPH which I hope will help to improve in my writing and also to learn to position my points appropriately. I like one of the quotes in this book:

People who write well, think well.

In my company, we use MSN for work. Recently, I chatted with my colleague over MSN.

She suddenly popped me a question, " Are you a Christian?"

I said," Yes. How about you?"

She said, "Nope."

I was puzzled by her question. I was thinking and laughing to myself, "Do you have the holy look?" Then I asked her why she asked me this question.

She said, "You look like one of my friends who is a Christian."

Then I said, " Oh I see. I think I have a common face. We should go lunch together."

She replied, "Sure."

Yesterday, I went out lunch with my another colleague who is a Christian. He is a humorous guy. We had a good talk. I learnt more about the company that I am working for, his area of work and also his ministry in church. A fruitful and enriching time.

I will have an exciting week ahead. I am going to meet some 'big shot' next week alone. I am a bit nervous but I know that God will be with me ;-) I have this BIG SHOT with me all the while so I shall not fear anything else.

The blue days are over. I giggle and laugh more recently but on the other hand, I need to learn to laugh at the appropriate time ;p I am triggered easily to laugh by little things so I need to watch out ;p

God, I thank you for watching over me all the while, during my good and bad times ;-)
