Search for Adam....Why we celebrate Christmas in December?

Today we had a sumptous lunch at Elaine's place. Check out Pei Shan's blog for details, http://peishanyeo.blogspot.com/2005/11/5th-november-crabs-galore.html

Midco told me that there's a program called "DNA Mystery: The search for Adam" at National Geography Channel but I missed it. It will be screened again on 22 Nov 05. Check it out if you are interested.

Where did we all come from? Could we all be descendants of Adam? And if he existed, who was he, where did he live and what did he look like? It is a mystery that intrigues us all and questions like these have been asked time and time again but nobody has got close to the answer - until now. Spencer Wells, a leading geneticist and National Geographic Explorer-In-Residence, is setting out on a quest to discover if there was an "Adam" from whom all humans are descended. Wells uses the latest in DNA testing technology to take us on an extraordinary journey across the globe as he traces humanity's family tree. As we travel through humanity's genetic past we'll encounter longstanding mysteries which today's DNA tools can finally solve. As Spencer Wells follows the Y-chromosomes backwards through the generations, the branches of man's family tree begin to coalesce into a single trunk, pointing to a single Adam. But now that we have found him, what did he look like and how did he live? DNA Mystery: The Search for Adam sets out to find the answers.

Neverthless I still caught another interesting documentary, "Mummy detectives: The three Kings" on Discovery Channel. It is a documentary on the 3 wise men on their journey to see Jesus. In this show, it said that Jesus was born in April and by the time the wise men reached Bethlehm to present Jesus gifts it was already December. Baby Jesus was already about 8 months old. So 25 Dec is not the actual birthday of Jesus Christ.

It is believed that the relics of the 3 wise men are now residing at Cologne , Germany.

  • I watched both documentaries (The Search for Scientific Adam and The Mummy Detectives: The Three Kings). They were interesting and thought-provoking, although I found some parts a tad far-fetched, but I suppose some guesswork is inevitable given the time that has lapsed between then and now and the paucity of data.

But the one which left the biggest impression was this documentary on the BBC some time back which tried to give a scientific explanation for the occurrences during the exodus. How the pillar of smoke and fire was a result of volcanic activity, and how the crossing of the Red Sea was actually the crossing of the Reed Sea (a much smaller body of water) whose waters receded due to some violent tremors.

I guess if humans are determined to provide scienfic explanations for seemingly inexplicable events, they can always do so - even at the cost of sounding far-fetched - the very notion which they scoffed at in the first place.

  • Wow!! The documentary about the Red sea or the Reed sea was indeed a bit too much. It's true..many times we want to give an explanation for certain events and sometimes people tried too hard then it becomes a hoax indeed as time proves itself. Read and view everything with a pince of salt. And also we also need to learn how to manage our perceptions as well as it will affect how we view people and the world around us. I read the Sat paper and it mentioned that decades of research have shown that we are not capable of being an objective observer of humans as our judgements are largely influenced by our hidden beliefs and expectations. I find this very true.

As Christ-believers in this knowledge-driven world, we need to learn to trust God and His Word. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. - Isa 55:9
